Comparing and selecting spatial predictors using local criteria

Vol. 2013 (2013), 21-13

Remote sensing technology for the study of Earth and its environment has led to “Big Data” that, paradoxically, have global extent but may be spatially sparse. Furthermore, the variability in the measurement error and the latent process error may not fit conveniently into the Gaussian linear paradigm. In this paper, we consider the problem of selecting a predictor from a finite collection of spatial predictors of a spatial random process defined on D, a subset of d-dimensional Euclidean space. Critically, we ...

Local spatial-predictor selection

Vol. 2013 (2013), 09-13

Consider the problem of spatial prediction of a random process from a spatial dataset. Global spatial-predictor selection provides a way to choose a single spatial predictor from a number of competing predictors. Instead, we consider local spatial-predictor selection at each spatial location in the domain of interest. This results in a hybrid predictor that could be considered global, since it takes the form of a combination of local predictors; we call this the locally selected spatial predictor. We pursue this idea ...

Improving generalized regression analysis for the spatial prediction of forest communities

Journal of Biogeography, Vol. 33, No. 10. (October 2006), pp. 1729-1749,

Abstract Aim  This study used data from temperate forest communities to assess: (1) five different stepwise selection methods with generalized additive models, (2) the effect of weighting absences to ensure a prevalence of 0.5, (3) the effect of limiting absences beyond the environmental envelope defined by presences, (4) four different methods for incorporating spatial autocorrelation, and (5) the effect of integrating an interaction factor defined by a regression tree on the residuals of an initial environmental model. Location  State of Vaud, ...

An evaluation of void-filling interpolation methods for SRTM data

International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Vol. 21, No. 9. (1 October 2007), pp. 983-1008,

The Digital Elevation Model that has been derived from the February 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has been one of the most important publicly available new spatial data sets in recent years. However, the ‘finished’ grade version of the data (also referred to as Version 2) still contains data voids (some 836,000 km2)—and other anomalies—that prevent immediate use in many applications. These voids can be filled using a range of interpolation algorithms in conjunction with other sources of elevation data, ...

Weighted median filters: a tutorial

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing In Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on, Vol. 43, No. 3. (March 1996), pp. 157-192,

Weighted Median (WM) filters have the robustness and edge preserving capability of the classical median filter and resemble linear FIR filters in certain properties. Furthermore, WM filters belong to the broad class of nonlinear filters called stack filters. This enables the use of the tools developed for the latter class in characterizing and analyzing the behavior and properties of WM filters, e.g. noise attenuation capability. The fact that WM filters are threshold functions allows the use of neural network training methods ...

Multi-dimensional weighted median: the module "wmedian" of the Mastrave modelling library

In Semantic Array Programming with Mastrave - Introduction to Semantic Computational Modelling (2012)

Weighted median (WM) filtering is a well known technique for dealing with noisy images and a variety of WM-based algorithms have been proposed as effective ways for reducing uncertainties or reconstructing degraded signals by means of available information with heterogeneous reliability. Here a generalized module for applying weighted median filtering to multi-dimensional arrays of information with associated multi-dimensional arrays of corresponding weights is presented. Weights may be associated to single elements or to groups of elements along given dimensions of the ...

The tragedy of the commons

Science, Vol. 162, No. 3859. (13 December 1968), pp. 1243-1248,

The population problem has no technical solution; it requires a fundamental extension in morality. [Excerpt] [...] A technical solution may be defined as one that requires a change only in the techniques of the natural sciences, demanding little or nothing in the way of change in human values or ideas of morality. In our day (though not in earlier times) technical solutions are always welcome. Because of previous failures in prophecy, it takes courage to assert that a desired technical solution is ...

Review of the main developments in the analytic hierarchy process

Expert Systems with Applications (May 2011),

[Abstract] In this paper the authors review the developments of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) since its inception. The focus of this paper is a neutral review on the methodological developments rather than reporting its applications that have appeared since its introduction. In particular, we discuss problem modelling, pair-wise comparisons, judgement scales, derivation methods, consistency indices, incomplete matrix, synthesis of the weights, sensitivity analysis and group decisions. All have been important areas of research in AHP. [Highlights] [::] Methodological developments of the analytic hierarchy ...

Towards a web-based collaborative weighting method in project

In IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (2002), 6,

For the purpose of a product design or a project in general, weighting a set of comparable criteria has been proven to be of utmost importance (e.g. weighting product functions in value analysis - VA -, and allocating a budget in a Design-To-Cost project). Moreover the weighting problem is related to basic properties in the field of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) through the notions of ordinal transitivity and rationality in the designers' mind. How should designers or project agents decide in ...

Equality bias impairs collective decision-making across cultures

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 112, No. 12. (24 March 2015), pp. 3835-3840,

[Significance] When making decisions together, we tend to give everyone an equal chance to voice their opinion. To make the best decisions, however, each opinion must be scaled according to its reliability. Using behavioral experiments and computational modelling, we tested (in Denmark, Iran, and China) the extent to which people follow this latter, normative strategy. We found that people show a strong equality bias: they weight each other’s opinion equally regardless of differences in their reliability, even when this strategy was at ...

New untrained aggregation methods for classifier combination

In Neural Networks (IJCNN), 2014 International Joint Conference on (July 2014), pp. 617-622,

The combined classification is a promising direction in pattern recognition and there are numerous methods that deal with forming classifier ensembles. The most popular approaches employ voting, where the final decision of compound classifier is a combination of individual classifiers' outputs, i.e., class labels or support functions. This paper concentrates on the problem how to design an effective combination rule, which takes into consideration the values of support functions returned by the individual classifiers. Because in many practical tasks we do ...

Pruning of memories by context-based prediction error

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 111, No. 24. (17 June 2014), pp. 8997-9002,

[Significance] Forgetting is often considered to be bad, but selective forgetting of unreliable information can have the positive side effect of reducing mental clutter, thereby making it easier to access our most important memories. Prior studies of forgetting have focused on passive mechanisms (decay, interference) or on effortful inhibition by cognitive control. Here we report the discovery of an active mechanism for forgetting that weakens memories selectively and without burdening the conscious mind. Specifically, we show that the brain automatically generates ...

A multi-criteria approach for an integrated land-cover-based assessment of ecosystem services provision to support landscape planning

Ecological Indicators, Vol. 21 (October 2012), pp. 54-66,

The article presents a multicriteria assessment framework for the qualitative estimation of regional potentials to provide ecosystem services as a prerequisite to support regional development planning. We applied this approach to a model region in Saxony, Eastern Germany. For the estimation of the potentials of the model region to provide ecosystem services, we used a modified approach compared to the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (2005). We then employed a benefit transfer and a purely expert driven approach to assess contribution of the ...
