High-resolution mapping of global surface water and its long-term changes

Nature, Vol. 540, No. 7633. (7 December 2016), pp. 418-422,

The location and persistence of surface water (inland and coastal) is both affected by climate and human activity and affects climate, biological diversity and human wellbeing. Global data sets documenting surface water location and seasonality have been produced from inventories and national descriptions, statistical extrapolation of regional data and satellite imagery, but measuring long-term changes at high resolution remains a challenge. Here, using three million Landsat satellite images, we quantify changes in global surface water over the past 32 years at ...

Dam-building threatens Mekong fisheries

Science, Vol. 354, No. 6316. (02 December 2016), pp. 1084-1085,

[Excerpt] Every April, the pa nyawn catfish would make their way up the Mekong River to spawn, crowding through a narrow channel that skirts Khone Falls in southern Laos. Villagers netted the thumb-sized fish by the hundreds of thousands. Then, in 2014, work started on Don Sahong Dam, which straddles the channel. Although the dam won't be completed for another 2 years, construction has already cut off the migration and destroyed the fishing sites, says Zeb Hogan, a biologist with the ...

From dwindling ice to headwater lakes: could dams replace glaciers in the European Alps?

Environmental Research Letters, Vol. 11, No. 5. (01 May 2016), 054022,

The potential exploitation of areas becoming ice-free in response to ongoing climate change has rarely been addressed, although it could be of interest from the water management perspective. Here we present an estimate for the potential of mitigating projected changes in seasonal water availability from melting glaciers by managing runoff through reservoirs. For the European Alps we estimate that by the end of the century, such a strategy could offset up to 65% of the expected summer-runoff changes from presently glacierized ...

Choosing among infinite alternatives

In Integrated and participatory water resources management theory (2007), pp. 223-242

In Chapter 7 we understood that, even when the Decision Maker (DM) is acting in conditions of full rationality, the design of the alternatives poses three difficulties: the presence of infinite alternatives; the presence of uncertainty produced by random disturbances; and the presence of recursive decisions. In this chapter, we begin to describe the tools to overcome these difficulties by analysing the Design Problem in the simplest of cases: the case in which the actions being considered are all planning actions ...

Integrated and participatory water resources management - Theory

Covering the more recent advances in Modelling, Planning, Management and Negotiations for Integrated Water Resource Management, this text brings together knowledge and concepts from Hydrology, System Analysis, Control Theory, Conflict Resolution, and Decision and Negotiation Theory. Without compromising on mathematical rigour, the book maintains a fine line between theory and application, methodology and tools, avoiding getting locked into excessively theoretical and formal development of the issues discussed. The non-technical aspects of water resource systems (such as societal, political and legal concerns) ...

Neuro-dynamic programming for designing water reservoir network management policies

Control Engineering Practice, Vol. 15, No. 8. (August 2007), pp. 1031-1038,

Stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) can improve the management of a multipurpose water reservoir by generating management policies which are efficient with respect to the management objectives (flood protection, water supply for irrigation, hydropower generation, etc.). The improvement in efficiency is even more remarkable for networks of reservoirs. Unfortunately, SDP is affected by the well-known ‘curse of dimensionality’, i.e. computational time and computer memory occupation increase exponentially with the dimension of the problem (number of reservoirs), and the problem rapidly becomes intractable. ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.
