Transdisciplinary global change research: the co-creation of knowledge for sustainability

Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, Vol. 5, No. 3-4. (September 2013), pp. 420-431,

[Highlights] [::] A new framework for integrated, transdisciplinary global change research for sustainability is introduced. [::] From a practical perspective three different dimensions of integration (scientific, international and sectoral) are discussed. [::] Co-design of research agendas and co-production of knowledge are discussed as necessary integration approaches to address Future Earth research challenges. [Abstract] The challenges formulated within the Future Earth framework set the orientation for research programmes in sustainability science for the next ten years. Scientific disciplines from natural and social science will collaborate both among ...

Boss competence and worker well-being

ILR Review, Vol. 70, No. 2. (March 2017), pp. 419-450,

Nearly all workers have a supervisor or “boss.” Yet little is known about how bosses influence the quality of employees’ lives. This study offers new evidence. First, the authors find that a boss’s technical competence is the single strongest predictor of a worker’s job satisfaction. Second, they demonstrate using longitudinal data, after controlling for fixed-effects, that even if a worker stays in the same job and workplace, a rise in the competence of a supervisor is associated with an improvement in ...

Harsh grades for ‘Europe’s MIT’

[Excerpt] The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) gets poor grades from the European Union’s financial watchdog. In a report released today, the European Court of Auditors said that EIT needs some fundamental changes if it is to fulfill its job of sparking innovation in Europe. [\n] EIT, officially launched in 2008, was the idea of former President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso. He hoped that the European Union could create an institute that would help forge links between ...

Irreversible climate change due to carbon dioxide emissions

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 106, No. 6. (10 January 2009), pp. 1704-1709,

The severity of damaging human-induced climate change depends not only on the magnitude of the change but also on the potential for irreversibility. This paper shows that the climate change that takes place due to increases in carbon dioxide concentration is largely irreversible for 1,000 years after emissions stop. Following cessation of emissions, removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide decreases radiative forcing, but is largely compensated by slower loss of heat to the ocean, so that atmospheric temperatures do not drop significantly ...

Impacts of genetically engineered crops on pesticide use in the U.S. -- the first sixteen years

Environmental Sciences Europe, Vol. 24, No. 1. (2012), 24,

Background. Genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant and insect-resistant crops have been remarkable commercial successes in the United States. Few independent studies have calculated their impacts on pesticide use per hectare or overall pesticide use, or taken into account the impact of rapidly spreading glyphosate-resistant weeds. A model was developed to quantify by crop and year the impacts of six major transgenic pest-management traits on pesticide use in the U.S. over the 16-year period, 1996–2011: herbicide-resistant corn, soybeans, and cotton; Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn targeting ...

The Semantic Web: The Origins of Artificial Intelligence Redux

In Third International Workshop on the History and Philosophy of Logic, Mathematics and Computation (HPLMC-04 2005) (2005)

Introduction. The World Wide Web is considered by many to be the most significant computational phenomenon yet, although even by the standards of computer science its development has been chaotic. While the promise of artificial intelligence to give us machines capable of genuine human-level intelligence seems nearly as distant as it was during the heyday of the field, the ubiquity of the World Wide Web is unquestionable. If anything it is the Web, not artificial intelligence as traditionally conceived, that has ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.

Please, be aware that the indexed meta-information entirely relies on voluntary work and constitutes a quite incomplete and not homogeneous work-in-progress.
INRMM-MiD was experimentally established by the Maieutike Research Initiative in 2008 and then improved with the help of several volunteers (with a major technical upgrade in 2011). This new integrated interface is operational since 2014.
