The lanky and the corky: fire-escape strategies in savanna woody species

Journal of Ecology, Vol. 101, No. 5. (1 September 2013), pp. 1265-1272,

[::] Fire and herbivory are the main disturbances shaping the structure of savannas. In these ecosystems, the key strategies by which woody plants escape fire are either early height growth (the lanky strategy) or early bark growth (the corky strategy). We hypothesize that the dominance of each strategy in different savannas depends on the prevailing disturbance regimes. Given the importance of herbivory in afrotropical savanna, we expect woody plants in these savannas to be taller and have thinner barks (the lanky ...

Multitrait successional forest dynamics enable diverse competitive coexistence

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 114, No. 13. (28 March 2017), pp. E2719-E2728,

[Significance] Walking through any forest, one is struck by the variety of plant forms coexisting. Given that all plants compete for the same basic resources, why is there not a single winner? Our study shows that when key ingredients common to all forests are accounted for—including disturbance events, competition for light, and two widely observed trait-based tradeoffs—models of niche differentiation predict forests of considerably greater diversity than was previously thought possible. In particular, our model accurately predicts the proliferation of species occupying ...

The structure, distribution, and biomass of the world's forests

Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics, Vol. 44, No. 1. (2013), pp. 593-622,

Forests are the dominant terrestrial ecosystem on Earth. We review the environmental factors controlling their structure and global distribution and evaluate their current and future trajectory. Adaptations of trees to climate and resource gradients, coupled with disturbances and forest dynamics, create complex geographical patterns in forest assemblages and structures. These patterns are increasingly discernible through new satellite and airborne observation systems, improved forest inventories, and global ecosystem models. Forest biomass is a complex property affected by forest distribution, structure, and ecological ...

Technical note: comparing and ranking soil drought indices performance over Europe, through remote-sensing of vegetation

Hydrology and Earth System Sciences, Vol. 14, No. 2. (12 February 2010), pp. 271-277,

In the past years there have been many attempts to produce and improve global soil-moisture datasets and drought indices. However, comparing and validating these various datasets is not straightforward. Here, interannual variations in drought indices are compared to interannual changes in vegetation, as captured by NDVI. By comparing the correlations of the different indices with NDVI we evaluated which drought index describes most realistically the actual changes in vegetation. Strong correlation between NDVI and the drought indices were found in areas ...

Response of vegetation to the 2003 European drought was mitigated by height

Biogeosciences, Vol. 11, No. 11. (4 June 2014), pp. 2897-2908,

The effects on climate of land-cover change, predominantly from the conversion of forests to crops or grassland, are reasonably well understood for low and high latitudes but are largely unknown for temperate latitudes. The main reason for this gap in our knowledge is that there are compensating effects on the energy and water balance that are related to changes in land-surface albedo, soil evaporation and plant transpiration. We analyse how vegetation height affected the response of vegetation during the 2003 European ...

Monumental trees

edited by Tim Bekaert

[Excerpt] This site started on a summer's eve in 2003 as a Belgian site about giant sequoia trees in Belgium and The Netherlands. Soon location details were provided by many people from these countries. In 2005 the site was restyled and was also partly available in French and English, but still manually edited by the webmaster. However, in 2010 this became unfeasible for him and the site became, an interactive community site where users could now add trees/measurements/photos themselves, without a single webmaster ...

Inter-regional variability in site index models for even-aged stands of stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) in Spain

Annals of Forest Science, Vol. 60, No. 3. (April 2003), pp. 259-269,

Data from 96 stem analysis and 37 permanent plots in even-aged stands of stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) in four regions of Spain (Central Range, Northern Plateau, West Andalusia and Catalonia) are used to develop a dominant height growth model for each region. These models are compared to detect similarities or differences in height growth patterns between regions, which will justify the need to build more regional site index curves for the species in Spain. Comparing these models involves homogeneity tests ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.
