How working as a research technician can bolster your scientific career

Nature, Vol. 560, No. 7719. (21 August 2018), pp. 517-519, https://doi.org/10.1038/d41586-018-05991-4

Abstract

A technician job can become a satisfying career — or act as a solid stepping stone. [Excerpt] [...] Research technicians in academia, industry, the non-profit sector and government do much of the daily leg-work of science. Their tasks include analysing soil or rock samples, testing medical devices, helping to design bioreactors and optimizing the shelf life of reagents. Titles vary almost as much as the job descriptions. Examples include ‘research technologist’, ‘research associate’, ‘research scientist’ and ‘member of the technical staff’. [...] ...

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977–2017)

Science, Vol. 357, No. 6353. (25 August 2017), pp. 758-758, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aao6074

Abstract

On 14 July, Maryam Mirzakhani, a luminary in pure mathematics, died of cancer at the age of 40. Her achievements had been most recently honored in 2014 by the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics. [Excerpt] [...] There are many possible uniformly curved shapes into which the surface can be bent. These shapes are called hyperbolic metrics and exhibit the non-Euclidean geometry discovered in the 1800s after 2000 years of attempts to prove its nonexistence. The plethora of all possible ...

Orchestrating a powerful group

Science, Vol. 352, No. 6283. (14 April 2016), pp. 378-378, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.352.6283.378

Abstract

[Excerpt] As I entered my assistant professor years in the early 1990s and worked to assemble my research team, I considered each candidate individually. I took on students based on grades and test scores, and my relationships with them were one-on-one. I didn't consider their teamwork abilities or soft skills—or the group dynamic as a whole. [...] [\n] [...] I now think of each group member as a critical puzzle piece for my collective. I assemble teams of individuals with different but complementary ...

Competitive science: is competition ruining science?

Infection and Immunity, Vol. 83, No. 4. (01 April 2015), pp. 1229-1233, https://doi.org/10.1128/iai.02939-14

Abstract

Science has always been a competitive undertaking. Despite recognition of the benefits of cooperation and team science, reduced availability of funding and jobs has made science more competitive than ever. Here we consider the benefits of competition in providing incentives to scientists and the adverse effects of competition on resource sharing, research integrity, and creativity. The history of science shows that transformative discoveries often occur in the absence of competition, which only emerges once fields are established and goals are defined. ...

Core services: reward bioinformaticians

Nature, Vol. 520, No. 7546. (8 April 2015), pp. 151-152, https://doi.org/10.1038/520151a

Abstract

Biological data will continue to pile up unless those who analyse it are recognized as creative collaborators in need of career paths, says Jeffrey Chang. [Excerpt] The US Precision Medicine Initiative, announced in January, relies on bioinformatics. The US$215-million project calls for collecting medical, physiological and genomic data from more than one million people in the United States, and aims to find patterns across individuals to improve health care. It does not address a worsening deficiency in the scientific community: biological data ...

Technical support

Nature, Vol. 517, No. 7536. (28 January 2015), pp. 528-528, https://doi.org/10.1038/517528a

Abstract

[Excerpt] Given that technical and support staff are such an important pillar of academic life, it is perhaps surprising that so little academic attention has been paid to their lot — and whether they are content with it. In 2011, researchers at King’s College London did publish a rare survey of skills and training in the United Kingdom, which raised a series of red flags (see go.nature.com/n74jsb). Technical staff are exposed on the front line when funding cuts bite: numbers working ...

The measure of research merit

Science, Vol. 346, No. 6214. (05 December 2014), pp. 1155-1155, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.aaa3796

Abstract

Each year, \$1.4 trillion are invested in research by governments, foundations, and corporations. Hundreds if not thousands of high-profile prizes and medals are awarded to the best researchers, boosting their careers. Therefore, establishing a reliable predictor of future performance is a trillion-dollar matter. Last month, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation convened an international assembly of leaders in academia, research management, and policy to discuss “Beyond Bibliometrics: Identifying the Best.” Current assessment is largely based on counting publications, counting citations, taking note ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.

They are subject to all applicable copyright protection. The conditions of use of each indexed publication is defined by its copyright owner. Please, be aware that the indexed meta-information entirely relies on voluntary work and constitutes a quite incomplete and not homogeneous work-in-progress.
INRMM-MiD was experimentally established by the Maieutike Research Initiative in 2008 and then improved with the help of several volunteers (with a major technical upgrade in 2011). This new integrated interface is operational since 2014.
