2017 hurricanes and aerosols simulation

In Scientific Visualization Studio (November 2017), 12772

[Excerpt] Tracking aerosols over land and water from August 1 to November 1, 2017. Hurricanes and tropical storms are obvious from the large amounts of sea salt particles caught up in their swirling winds. The dust blowing off the Sahara, however, gets caught by water droplets and is rained out of the storm system. Smoke from the massive fires in the Pacific Northwest region of North America are blown across the Atlantic to the UK and Europe. This visualization is a ...

Modelling as a discipline

International Journal of General Systems, Vol. 30, No. 3. (1 January 2001), pp. 261-282,

Modelling is an essential and inseparable part of all scientific, and indeed all intellectual, activity. How then can we treat it as a separate discipline? The answer is that the professional modeller brings special skills and techniques to bear in order to produce results that are insightful, reliable, and useful. Many of these techniques can be taught formally, such as sophisticated statistical methods, computer simulation, systems identification, and sensitivity analysis. These are valuable tools, but they are not as important as ...

Education: animating possible worlds

Science, Vol. 308, No. 5718. (01 April 2005), pp. 29e-29e,

Global warming's future impact depends on factors such as human population growth and fossil fuel use. High school and introductory college classes can learn how these and other variables might influence temperatures, sea levels, and more at a new tutorial hosted by California State University, Los Angeles. The Java applet helps students work through scenarios for the future sketched by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. For example, animations illustrate flooding in areas such as Florida and Indonesia under different sets ...

Assessing crown fire potential in coniferous forests of western North America: a critique of current approaches and recent simulation studies

International Journal of Wildland Fire, Vol. 19, No. 4. (2010), 377,

To control and use wildland fires safely and effectively depends on creditable assessments of fire potential, including the propensity for crowning in conifer forests. Simulation studies that use certain fire modelling systems (i.e. NEXUS, FlamMap, FARSITE, FFE-FVS (Fire and Fuels Extension to the Forest Vegetation Simulator), Fuel Management Analyst (FMAPlus®), BehavePlus) based on separate implementations or direct integration of Rothermel’s surface and crown rate of fire spread models with Van Wagner’s crown fire transition and propagation models are shown to have ...

Growth and yield model for uneven-aged mixtures of Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus nigra Arn. in Catalonia, north-east Spain

Annals of Forest Science, Vol. 61, No. 1. (January 2004), pp. 9-24,

A distance-independent diameter growth model, a static height model, an ingrowth model and a survival model for uneven-aged mixtures of Pinus sylvestris L. and Pinus nigra Arn. in Catalonia (north-east Spain) were developed. Separate models were developed for P. sylvestris and P. nigra. These models enable stand development to be simulated on an individual tree basis. The models are based on 922 permanent sample plots established in 1989 and 1990 and remeasured in 2000 and 2001 by the Spanish National Forest ...

A taxonomy of prospection: introducing an organizational framework for future-oriented cognition

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 111, No. 52. (30 December 2014), pp. 18414-18421,

Prospection—the ability to represent what might happen in the future—is a broad concept that has been used to characterize a wide variety of future-oriented cognitions, including affective forecasting, prospective memory, temporal discounting, episodic simulation, and autobiographical planning. In this article, we propose a taxonomy of prospection to initiate the important and necessary process of teasing apart the various forms of future thinking that constitute the landscape of prospective cognition. The organizational framework that we propose delineates episodic and semantic forms of ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.
