The real cost of energy

Nature, Vol. 553, No. 7682. (2017), pp. S145-S147,

All energy production has environmental and societal effects. But calculating them — and pricing energy accordingly — is no easy task. [Excerpt] [...] Electricity production is rife with externalities. Mining for raw materials often causes water pollution, habitat destruction and socio-economic harm. Burning coal pollutes the air, sickening and killing people, and introduces toxic mercury into the aquatic food chain. Nuclear-power plants require the clean-up and maintenance of radioactive materials after decommissioning. Energy production uses water, sometimes at the expense of agriculture and ...

Dam-building threatens Mekong fisheries

Science, Vol. 354, No. 6316. (02 December 2016), pp. 1084-1085,

[Excerpt] Every April, the pa nyawn catfish would make their way up the Mekong River to spawn, crowding through a narrow channel that skirts Khone Falls in southern Laos. Villagers netted the thumb-sized fish by the hundreds of thousands. Then, in 2014, work started on Don Sahong Dam, which straddles the channel. Although the dam won't be completed for another 2 years, construction has already cut off the migration and destroyed the fishing sites, says Zeb Hogan, a biologist with the ...

Energy from renewable sources

In Statistics Explained (2015), 26960

This article presents a detailed statistical overview of the production and consumption of energy from renewable sources in the European Union (EU). It is based on data compiled in accordance with accounting rules set down in the Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. The statistical information presented in this article is coherent with statistical information reported under Regulation (EC) No 1099/2008 on energy statistics. [\n] Renewable energy in the EU has grown strongly in recent ...

Classification of geomorphological effects downstream of dams

CATENA, Vol. 40, No. 4. (August 2000), pp. 375-401,

The effects of dams on downstream geomorphology are reviewed and a typology is devised, consisting of nine cases. The classification can be seen as a further development of Lane's balance between water discharge, sediment load, grain size, and river slope. Depending on changes in released water flow and changes in released sediment load, relative to the transport capacity of the flow, it is possible to estimate resulting cross-sectional geomorphology. The longitudinal extent of changes and their variability with time, and the ...

Climate change impacts on hydropower in the Swiss and Italian Alps

Science of The Total Environment (November 2013),

This paper provides a synthesis and comparison of methodologies and results obtained in several studies devoted to the impact of climate change on hydropower. By putting into perspective various case studies, we provide a broader context and improved understanding of climate changes on energy production. We also underline the strengths and weaknesses of the approaches used as far as technical, physical and economical aspects are concerned. Although the catchments under investigation are located close to each other in geographic terms (Swiss ...

Optimal Flow Allocation in the Zambezi River System

Water Resources Management In Water Resources Management, Vol. 11, No. 5. (1997), pp. 377-393,

The optimal flow allocation in the Zambezi system, the largest multi-reservoir water resources system in southern Africa, is analysed. The problem is formulated in network terms and solved with a network flow algorithm. The present configuration of the system is taken as the reference to evaluate the benefits of the proposed modifications to the existing hydropower schemes. The introduction of additional operational constraints is also considered in order to analyse the costs of environmental protection of paludal ecosystems and to account ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
