Pest categorisation of the Gonipterus scutellatus species complex

EFSA Journal, Vol. 16, No. 1. (January 2018), e05107, https://doi.org/10.2903/j.efsa.2018.5107

Abstract

The Panel on Plant health performed a pest categorisation of the Australian Eucalyptus snout-beetle Gonipterus scutellatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), for the EU. G. scutellatus should be referred as the G. scutellatus species complex because it includes several cryptic species. A complete nomenclature of the species present in the EU is still pending. It is a quarantine pest listed in Annex IIB of Council Directive 2000/29/EC. Protected zones are in place in Greece and Portugal (Azores). In the EU, it has been found ...

Combining forest structure data and fuel modelling to classify fire hazard in Portugal

Annals of Forest Science, Vol. 66, No. 4. (2009), pp. 415-415, https://doi.org/10.1051/forest%2f2009013

Abstract

Fire management activities can greatly benefit from the description of wildland fuel to assess fire hazard. [\n] A forest typology developed from the Portuguese National Forest Inventory that combines cover type (the dominant overstorey species) and forest structure defined as a combination of generic stand density (closed or open) and height (low or tall) is translated into fuel models. Fire behaviour simulations that accounted for the fire environment modification induced by stand structure resulted in an objective and quantitative assessment of fire ...

Regional estimation of woodland moisture content by inverting Radiative Transfer Models

Remote Sensing of Environment, Vol. 132 (May 2013), pp. 59-70, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2013.01.004

Abstract

[Abstract] We inverted the PROSPECT and GEOSAIL Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data to retrieve Live Fuel Moisture Content (LFMC) in woodlands located in the peninsular territory of Spain. Ecological rules were used to parameterize the RTM. This approach reduces the probability of an ill-posed problem in the inversion of the selected RTMs, by rejecting unrealistic combinations of input parameters. Three species representatives of each region were used to derive the ecological rules: Quercus ilex L., Quercus ...

Abstract

This work studied the potential use of the waste from Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens as energy crops, evaluating young and adult stages of both in all four seasons of the year with different moisture contents. The study was carried out made in Cantabria (North coast of Spain), located at latitude 43°28′N, and longitude 3°48′W. In this region, 29,513 ha are dedicated to the growth of Eucalyptus, with about 80% E. globulus, and 20% E. nitens. Six different plantations have been analyzed ...

Geographic Patterns of Genetic Variation in Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus and a Revised Racial Classification

Australian Journal of Botany, Vol. 47, No. 2. (1999), pp. 237-263

Abstract

The geographic patterns of genetic variation in a wide variety of quantitative traits were studied in Eucalyptus globulus ssp. globulus and its intergrades, leading to a revised racial classification. The analysis was based on 35 traits assessed in five field trials in northern Tasmania from approximately 500 open-pollinated families, encompassing 49 collection localities in native stands. There were significant differences between the collection localities for most traits. While growth and survival traits exhibited weak spatial structuring, there were clear regional patterns ...

Post-fire survival and regeneration of Eucalyptus globulus in forest plantations in Portugal

Forest Ecology and Management, Vol. 310 (December 2013), pp. 194-203, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2013.08.036

Abstract

We modelled post-fire mortality and regeneration of E. globulus in forest plantations. Mortality was low but most trees were top-killed showing basal regeneration only. Mortality and top-kill were mainly affected by fire severity and tree diameter. Stand composition and vegetation cover also affected the probability of top-kill. Basal resprouting was affected by fire severity, tree diameter and topography. Eucalyptus globulus is one of the most important pulpwood plantation species in the world, and nowadays it is present in most continents. ...

Abstract

Eucalyptus globulus

In Enzyklopädie der Holzgewächse: Handbuch und Atlas der Dendrologie (1997)

Abstract

Abstract

A Stochastic Dynamic Programming Approach to Optimize Short-Rotation Coppice Systems Management Scheduling: An Application to Eucalypt Plantations under Wildfire Risk in Portugal

Forest Science, Vol. 58, No. 4. (August 2012), pp. 353-365, https://doi.org/10.5849/forsci.10-084

Abstract

This article presents and discusses research with the aim of developing a stand-level management scheduling model for short-rotation coppice systems that may take into account the risk of wildfire. The use of the coppice regeneration method requires the definition of both the optimal harvest age in each cycle and the optimal number of coppice cycles within a full rotation. The scheduling of other forest operations such as stool thinning and fuel treatments (e.g., shrub removals) must be further addressed. In this ...
