GlobalTreeSearch: the first complete global database of tree species and country distributions

Journal of Sustainable Forestry, Vol. 36, No. 5. (4 July 2017), pp. 454-489, https://doi.org/10.1080/10549811.2017.1310049

Abstract

This article presents, for the first time, an overview of all known tree species by scientific name and country level distribution, and describes an online database GlobalTreeSearch that provides access to this information. Based on our comprehensive analysis of published data sources and expert input, the number of tree species currently known to science is 60,065, representing 20% of all angiosperm and gymnosperm plant species. Nearly half of all tree species (45%) are found in just 10 families, with the 3 ...

Integrating biodiversity distribution knowledge: toward a global map of life

Trends in Ecology & Evolution, Vol. 27, No. 3. (March 2012), pp. 151-159, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tree.2011.09.007

Abstract

Global knowledge about the spatial distribution of species is orders of magnitude coarser in resolution than other geographically-structured environmental datasets such as topography or land cover. Yet such knowledge is crucial in deciphering ecological and evolutionary processes and in managing global change. In this review, we propose a conceptual and cyber-infrastructure framework for refining species distributional knowledge that is novel in its ability to mobilize and integrate diverse types of data such that their collective strengths overcome individual weaknesses. The ultimate ...

Chorological maps for the main European woody species

Data in Brief, Vol. 12 (June 2017), pp. 662-666, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dib.2017.05.007

Abstract

A novel chorological data compilation for the main European tree and shrub species is presented. This dataset was produced by combining numerous and heterogeneous data collected from 20th century atlas monographs providing complete species distribution maps, and from more recent national to regional atlases, occurrence geodatabases and scientific literature. The dataset is composed of numerous species distribution maps available in geographical information system (GIS) format, created by compiling, evaluating and synthesizing data of all collected sources. The geometry of the individual ...

Geographic distribution of 24 major tree species in the Mediterranean and their genetic resources

(2016)

Abstract

[Excerpt: Introduction] The Mediterranean Basin is one of the world’s richest places in terms of animal and plant diversity. It is a highly diverse region and its mountains, rivers, forests and thousands of islands form a mosaic of natural and cultural landscapes of incomparable value. With around 25,000 species of native plants, of which more than half are endemic, and because many habitats and species are threatened, the Mediterranean is recognized as one of the Global Biodiversity Hotspots [18]. For millennia, ...

Espécies arbóreas indígenas em Portugal continental - Guia de utilização

(March 2016)

Abstract

Abstract

[Excerpt] The European Atlas of Forest Tree Species is the first comprehensive publication of such a unique and essential environmental resource, that is, our trees. Leading scientists and forestry professionals have contributed in the many stages of the production of this atlas, through the collection of ground data on the location of tree species, elaboration of the distribution and suitability maps, production of the photographic material and compilation of the different chapters. The European Atlas of Forest Tree Species is both ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.

Please, be aware that the indexed meta-information entirely relies on voluntary work and constitutes a quite incomplete and not homogeneous work-in-progress.
INRMM-MiD was experimentally established by the Maieutike Research Initiative in 2008 and then improved with the help of several volunteers (with a major technical upgrade in 2011). This new integrated interface is operational since 2014.
