Valuing nature's contributions to people: the IPBES approach

Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, Vol. 26-27 (June 2017), pp. 7-16, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cosust.2016.12.006

Abstract

[Highlights] [::] Nature and its contributions to people’s quality of life are associated with a wide diversity of values. [::] IPBES embraces this diversity of values, as well as the need to integrate and bridge them in its assessments. [::] Uncovering the values of nature’s contributions to people (NCP) can bridge notions of nature and a good quality of life. [::] Transformation towards sustainability requires addressing power relations among different perspectives on the values of NCP. [::] Intrinsic, instrumental and relational values need to be acknowledged ...

Where are cultural and social in ecosystem services? A framework for constructive engagement

BioScience, Vol. 62, No. 8. (01 August 2012), pp. 744-756, https://doi.org/10.1525/bio.2012.62.8.7

Abstract

A focus on ecosystem services (ES) is seen as a means for improving decisionmaking. In the research to date, the valuation of the material contributions of ecosystems to human well-being has been emphasized, with less attention to important cultural ES and nonmaterial values. This gap persists because there is no commonly accepted framework for eliciting less tangible values, characterizing their changes, and including them alongside other services in decisionmaking. Here, we develop such a framework for ES research and practice, addressing ...

Abstract

[Significance] People are fascinated by the amazing diversity of tropical forests and will be surprised to learn that robust estimates of the number of tropical tree species are lacking. We show that there are at least 40,000, but possibly more than 53,000, tree species in the tropics, in contrast to only 124 across temperate Europe. Almost all tropical tree species are restricted to their respective continents, and the Indo-Pacific region appears to be as species-rich as tropical America, with each of these ...

Meta-information Database (INRMM-MiD).
This database integrates a dedicated meta-information database in CiteULike (the CiteULike INRMM Group) with the meta-information available in Google Scholar, CrossRef and DataCite. The Altmetric database with Article-Level Metrics is also harvested. Part of the provided semantic content (machine-readable) is made even human-readable thanks to the DCMI Dublin Core viewer. Digital preservation of the meta-information indexed within the INRMM-MiD publication records is implemented thanks to the Internet Archive.
The library of INRMM related pubblications may be quickly accessed with the following links.

They are subject to all applicable copyright protection. The conditions of use of each indexed publication is defined by its copyright owner. Please, be aware that the indexed meta-information entirely relies on voluntary work and constitutes a quite incomplete and not homogeneous work-in-progress.
INRMM-MiD was experimentally established by the Maieutike Research Initiative in 2008 and then improved with the help of several volunteers (with a major technical upgrade in 2011). This new integrated interface is operational since 2014.
